To Mr. Nathaniel Dove

Aug. 30, 1740.
Sir,
The great improvement you have made in the Art of Writing is a plain Proof of an uncommon Genius; and that Modesty which attends your Merit, has justly gain'd you the Esteem of the Ablest Penmen. As you have been pleas'd to favour Me with several Pieces for the service of my Universal Penman, I think it incumbent on me to pay you my grateful Acknowledgements for your friendly Assistance. However, I must still desire You to write a Piece or Two more for me in Your legible, free, and expeditious Manner, which, I doubt not, will answer the Expectations of the most Curious: And the sooner you Oblige me in this Particular, the more acceptable it will be to
Sir,
Your most Obliged humble Servant

Description

A visualization of the relationships centred on George Bickham the elder's anthologies: Penmanship in its Utmost Beauty and Extent (1731) and The Universal Penman (1733-41).

The objects in this rendering are either people (generally writing masters, engravers, or printer/booksellers), or texts. The types of relationships between these two straightforward categories of objects are varied: like any published texts, these have authors of record as well as publishers (booksellers, in 18thc terms) and/or printers, though as with any ephemeral text of the period, we do not always have that information. With calligraphic texts that offer exemplars (images of handwriting designed to be copied), the question of authorship is complicated by the division of creative labour into writing, and engraving. Sometimes the same person did both, as did Bickham and Edward Cocker before him, but usually the images on these pages were created in collaboration. Since we are focused here on anthologies, we need to consider the additional role of contributor. And, as with many publications of the period, there are also dedicatees, writers of prefaces, and subscribers: these secondary roles are also represented here in hope of a fuller understanding of the complexity of the network that structured this particular corner of British eighteenth-century print culture.

Caveats:
☞I have not seen all the texts mentioned as not all are accessible, or even extant.
☞There are likely more connections to be made; the ones listed here are verifiable, but doubtless, others exist.
☞A complete content analysis of each of Bickham's collections at a page-by-page level would be needed in order to speak with authority about the degree to which the plates from The universal penman were reused: a project for another time!
